Frequently Asked Questions:

How often is practice required?

Currently group band practices are held either weekly or fortnightly. This information is available via a published roster.

Where are rehearsals held & for how long?

Normal practices can vary from 1 to 3 hrs. In the lead up to competitions, practice before and after lunch on weekends are common. The Band Room at the lower level at the rear of Crossing Theatre is the venue. At all times, daily at home practice would ensure you are musically ‘fit’ at all times.

What will it cost members annually?:

Registration fees are set on a sliding scale and due on 1st July. $40 for the first family member, $30 for the second family member, $20 for the third family member, $10 for the fourth family member, with a limit of $100 per family household. $2 for non-playing members.

How do I get an instrument?

The Band has a reasonable selection of brass instruments for new members to learn on. These are provided at no cost.

What instruments are played in a brass band?

Brass Bands consist of cornets, flugel and tenor horns, euphoniums, baritones, trombones, basses and percussion instruments including drum kits. Occasionally a trumpet is played also.

How do I get a uniform?

Following your attaining a suitable level of musicality, your musical director will put you in touch with the uniform co-ordinator to be provided with the necessary pieces. The uniform is provided at no cost also.

How will I learn to play?

Beginning players – both young children and adults – are taught to read music and play in a beginners group prior to taking on accompanying roles in either junior or senior band when the real fun begins.

What is expected of me as a playing member?

You are required to attend practices & events on a very regular basis. This is a commitment to the community. You are to be respectful to all other members of the band and to the public. The uniform and instruments are to be well maintained and should be returned cleaned and in good order at the conclusion of your time with them.

At what events will I be expected to participate?

Local Community events for Australia Day, Anzac Day, Street Marches, Christmas Performances, Eisteddfod, fundraising and social events.  Regional, State and National competitions as requested in consultation with musical directors and committee.
